This past Saturday morning I spent a good deal of time thinking about search marketing and blogging. Does that sound odd? The answer is....not really.
I spent part of my Labor Day weekend running in a half marathon in Arcadia, Indiana. This race was different than most half marathons I have been in because 95% of the scenery included flat, country roads that led me between cornfields. While it was nice, it wasn't the most attention grabbing course. I can'
t complain too much as I knocked off over 10 minutes and 12 minutes respectively from my last two half marathons in 2009 (picture me tooting my own horn - toot, toot).
The bottom line is that I had many moments where my mind wandered to other things not related to me running 13.1 miles. Mostly I thought about how I can get my blogging momentum going in the right direction. I have been with Compendium for two months, and I know I should be dedicating more time to blogging. I am going to apply three running lessons learned to help get me on track with blogging.
1. Plan your blogging schedule - Each week I know how many miles and which days I am going to run. I always leave flexibility in my schedule, but I set out my expectations at the very beginning of the week. Apply this to your blogging program by laying out how many posts you plan to write for that week as well as general content ideas for each post.
2. Pace yourself - To see the results from your business community blog requires you to pace yourself over the long term. You cannot expect to run 26.2 miles within your first two weeks of running. You also cannot expect to make 25 posts in one week and see all of your search traffic jump over night. Space out your posts, build momentum, keep the pace and expect that hard work will yield results.
3. Just blog (run) - Don't over complicate running or blogging. Both are actually very easy to do but you can't thinking about either too much. Otherwise, you will start developing reasons why you don't have time to do either.
