Improve Your Writing in One Simple Step

Friday, February 13, 2009 by Randy Cox
As an aspiring blogger, I'm on the lookout for things I can use to improve my writing.  Here is a tip from Philip Yaffe, former columnist for the Wall Street Journal, that is very simple to do: Put the two most important bits of information at the beginning and at the end of each sentence.  He calls them "hotspots."

Yaffe's article in ACM Ubiquity shows many examples that demonstrate the strength of this technique.  A sentence organized in this way is far easier to understand than another sentence with the important ideas buried in the middle.  Give it a try in your next blog post!
