What a Difference a Post Title Makes

Friday, March 6, 2009 by Douglas Karr
The last few months, I've been working with one of our clients that have very challenging keywords and don't have the volume of traffic that we'd like them to have for a successful corporate blogging strategy.

In reviewing their blog posts, I noticed that all of the post titles were very generic.  I rewrote two of their posts with some Post Titles that really popped and sent them the changes with notes on why I made them.
Post Titles in Corporate Blogging Strategies are Important

The client immediately took the advice to heart and began writing fantastic post titles that were very descriptive and utilized keywords effectively.  Within 10 days, they began getting relevant search traffic from the new posts.

The improvement was so drastic that it motivated us to do an internal webinar with our clients on writing great post titles.

There are 3 purposes for a Post Title:
  1. Post titles summarize the content within the blog post and set expectations with readers on what the topic is about.
  2. Post Titles Capture a search engine user's attention and lead them to your post.  A compelling blog post can make the difference between someone simply seeing your site on the search results and actually clicking through.
  3. Post Titles provide some SEO benefit. Post titles are a sub-heading on the page and actually out-weigh other content on the page.  Utilizing keywords and phrases effectively in a post title will provide it higher ranking.
Writing compelling post titles that attract searchers and gain search engine placement is incredibly important to your overall corporate blogging strategy.
