To monitor your blog's impact, you need to be measuring it's success. Google Analytics is a bit challenging out of the box; however, they've recently released the beat of Custom Reporting. There are 2 essential custom reports that you can build within Google Analytics that we've developed that will help you to concentrate on what is driving business via your blog:
- Keywords and CTAs - this is a measurement of the keywords that search engine users have gotten to your blog with and the number of times they've clicked on your calls-to-action. This report will show you which keywords you need to concentrate your content on to drive more business.
- Content and CTAs - writing compelling (relevant) content is essential to any business blog. Blogs provide you the technology to release a lot of content to see what's working and what's not working when it comes to driving business to your site. This report will show you which posts you've written that are driving the most conversions.
Steps to building these reports:
- Add onclick events that capture any clicks to your Calls to Action.
- Add goals to Google Analytics that will measure those clicks. Be sure to enable those goals.
- Add a Custom Report with New Visits and Goals as your metrics and Keywords as your Dimension. Name your report Keywords and CTAs, save, and run the custom report.
- To see which Keywords drive the most traffic, you'll want to sort the report descending on the Goal column (once you begin getting traffic and users clicking through).
- Add a Custom Report with New Visits and Goals as your metrics and Page Title as your Dimension. Name your report Content and CTAs, save, and run the custom report.
