How often should I post to my blog?

Wednesday, February 4, 2009 by Douglas Karr
There are 2 different audiences for every blog:
  1. Readers - these could be current customers, colleagues, fans, etc.
  2. Browsers - these are folks that find you through search or indirectly through network connections, social media, etc.
Given that you're feeding two different audiences, the answer to the question, How often should I post to my corporate blog?  requires an additional question:

How fast would you like to grow traffic to your business?

Every week we get a few new business blogs out on our network.  We help these bloggers monitor their productivity and their organic search traffic.  My recommendations for how often you should post are:
  1. The more often you post, the more opportunity for getting organic search traffic.  Google doesn't know what time it is - but it does love frequency and recency.  Blog more often -> get found more often -> grow traffic -> grow business!
  2. Blogging consistently sets and meets expectations with your direct traffic.  If I know you blog every day and I enjoy visiting your blog... I'll visit every day.  Of course, the growing use of RSS readers puts the power in the readers' hands - so I don't believe consistency is as important as frequency.
Ultimately, I believe a business should blog at least every day.  Fresh content on a daily basis will attract a lot of traffic within a couple of months.

There are some strategic exceptions, too.  I was speaking to Jarrod Vrazel of the ACountry Music Blog and advised him to blog much more!  ACountry is a resource for Country Music fans looking for concert tickets.  Since events happen much more often, I would blog as early as I could find out about a concert so that I can get that search engine attention.

As well, Jarrod has an opportunity to cover events like the Houston Rodeo that has a ton of entertainment - including Rascal Flatts, Alan Jackson, Clay Walker, Trace Adkins, Toby Keith and more!  Writing targeted content on each entertainer is going to provide Jarrod's blog with much more exposure to search engine traffic than putting it all in a single post.

Jarrod posted about 20 posts that day - all of them valuable and relevant to both readers of his blog and folks searching for country music tickets!  His readers will soon learn that if they wish to score tickets - his blog will be the one to go to!
