Are business blogs too "salesy"?

Friday, October 17, 2008 by Megan Glover
Oh yea - I'm going there because I've been involved in a few conversations lately about business blog content and is it focused to much around selling your product or service?

My short answer is well... duh! Of course business blogging should be centered around your product, solution and expertise within the industry. If you're not using your business blog to attract new business and set your solution apart from the rest - then why blog?

I also think though... there needs to be a good balance between creating blog content that is both personal and educational for the reader. After all, people buy from people not marketing speak.

Sarah Sedberry a Client Success Manager at Compendium and Kaila Woodside a Business Development manager do a great job merging personality and professionalism to create resource rich blog content that is both fun to read and educational.

As a blog author it's important to find that balance but at the end of the day people are reading your business blog for advice and education. If they wanted to read about your cat or Ford F150... well, then they probably would have Googled another search term.

I totally agree, You earn the right to offer a bit of a sales pitch if you if you have delivered relevant content. If you don't you will be selling to yourself, because your readers, and potential customers won't come back!

I like that phrase, Lorraine... "earn the right to offer a bit of a sales pitch". I think we can all take that to heart whether it's writing blog content or talking face to face with a potential customer, first and foremost, you have to provide what is relevant to them (what they need to solve their problem). Thanks for your comment.
