What can we learn about Search from The Last of the Mohicans?

Tuesday, June 2, 2009 by Chris Baggott
I love this movie!  But what I never appreciated until this morning was what a great lesson there was here for Search Marketing. My new hero is Cora.

We all remember Hawkeye's passionate line:   "I WILL FIND YOU!"

Sure Hawkeye...but how?

The only way Hawkeye was able to find Cora, was because she was smart enough to leave signs everywhere.   Duncan and Alice were submissive, they hoped for the best and wound up dead.    Cora wanted to be found, and she knew that to be found she had to increase her chances that searchers would come across her signs....and (key point here)....  the more signs she put out, the greater the likelihood that she would be found.  Broken branches, bits of cloth.....this is all content, and the more the better.

This is why business needs to understand blogging as a tool for SEO.   Business blogs and widespread employee content contributions are the equivalent of leaving signs for searchers.

Search is first and foremost about content and pages.   Blogs are pages that never run out of content.  The more you have, the greater you increase the likelihood that those searching "WILL FIND YOU".    Add in some passion, drama...tell good stories about how you solve the searchers problem (we all know Hawkeye's problem, Miss Monroe) and you have a winning combination.   Blogging Goals start with search.

Movies teach us so much about life. It is good to be able to justify our watching them as research. In this case I think you did an excellent job of relating it our industry. Maybe if we dig deep enough we can find a way that she made herself "relevant" in his search. Unfortunately if you go all the way with this I'd have to say she was not found on page one of the results. Probably more like page 28.

Interesting comment. Not sure I'm following though. From the beginning she was number one. There was actual competition right? Probably another key point in the ideas of Corporate Blogging.....telling a great compelling story :-) So what we have here is a searcher who knows what he want's but can't find it. The 'searchee' who wants to be found, so leaves lots of signs (blogs) everywhere she possibly can....and in the end a happy searcher. Win Win :-)
