We did a webinar yesterday that was overwhelming. The topic was business blogging as an SEO strategy...basically leveraging company blogs as a Customer Acquisition Strategy. Our typical webinars usually get three hundred or so attendees....we have done this one twice and have had close to 2,000 people attend!
There were a lot of questions asked, so I thought that I'd use this venue to cover some of them over the weekend.
#1 Jacques askes: Can blogging be used by people who aren't 'writers'?
Great question. The answer of course is yes. So many bloggers, business or otherwise, get hung up on the idea of content and thinking that it's about the writing. When I first started blogging I put way too much thought into it. Seth Godin told me I needed to be more "Pithy".
There is such a thing a writing for the web. People dont usually read every word online, they skim...they are looking for key indicators of credibility and as far as search goes, they are looking for authority. Do you know what you are talking about? Does that match their search intent.
We talk about using your keywords as a guide to what you should be blogging about. Think also about telling the stories about your customers. There is a Bike Shop I'm nagging about this now. All of their blog posts are focused on 'biking issues' not bikes. If I'm one of the 20,000 people a month who type some version of Bike Shop, Indianapolis into a search engine, I'm not looking for big time bike issues....I'm looking for a bike shop :-)
Talk about your customers, talk about your bikes, talk about how happy you made someone by outfitting them with the perfect bike. Focus on the story, not the quality of the writing.
