New Client's Success in Blogging for Search

In the past week, I've had the opportunity to change roles at Compendium.  I moved from the marketing department into client success, and it's great to now have the opportunity to talk more in-depth with current clients. 

In the past two days, I've had a couple conversations with Metrocrete, and I've loved hearing about the success the company is already seeing through Compendium's blogging solution.  Their blogs are already being indexed by the search engines and the company is currently seeing the results of moving up in organic search rankings.  Metrocrete started using Compendium's blog software less than 2 weeks ago!

Many people today still think that blogging is simply a way to write down thoughts and share them with others in the blogosphere.  Mothers blog to share cute things their children do.  Executives blog to discuss ideas they have for their companies.  But hopefully, if you're reading this, you know that blogging is about so much more. 

At Compendium, we often talk about "blogging for business."  But what if your organization isn't a typical business?  Can you still benefit from having a Compendium blog?  Of course!

Not only do I have the title of Client Success Specialist at work, I'm also a 2009 Orr Fellow.  This is a pretty cool title in itself!  Orr Fellows serve a two-year commitment with their host companies (mine being Compendium) and engage in innovative projects.  They also get to work with top company executives in various roles and recruit top talent from around the state of Indiana to be future Fellows.  To learn more about the Fellowship, check out our website.  

As we begin to recruit 2010 Fellows, we came to the realization that we need to have more of an online presence in order to get our name out there.  My solution?  A blog through Compendium!  Although we're not trying to specifically sell anything, we still want people to know our name.  We'd like to collect as many resumes as possible in order to choose the most qualified candidates we can.  So why not start a Fellowship blog?  Not only does blogging provide an excellent opportunity for us to talk about what we do on a daily basis, through Compendium, it can also increase our search engine optimization.  How great would it be if a college senior Googled "Indianapolis Job Opportunities" and an Orr Fellow's blog appeared first in the list?  Obviously this would go a long way in getting our name out to students. 

So despite the fact that your organization may be not be the traditional business to business or business to consumer company, you can still benefit from having a blog!  What organization would not want to draw attention to their site?

Old School

It seems lately I have been having the same conversations with people trying to figure out online marketing.  They are still looking at things from an "Old School" marketing approach.  They are looking at numbers of impressions or eyeballs that will see their message.

They are missing the boat with all the tools available to them when is comes to search marketing.  They have the ability to attract the exact type of customer they want simply by getting specific and focused which allows them to get more qualified eyeballs that are more likely to buy.

Keyword targeting and understanding how people search for your products and services is key to leveraging search marketing and online marketing.  Blogging and other social media outlets are a great way to flood the marketplace with these keywords and have people find you.

Online and search marketing also allows you track the results of your efforts.  Blogging for search actually has a purpose.  Figuring out ways to increase and use SEO tools to your advantage is crucial.  Do yourself a favor setup a blog.  Figure out the best blogging solution for your business and just do it.

So being a new blogger I had no idea what to expect when starting a blog, it was a very confusing thing to me because I never knew what to write about. Then I quickly realized how easy blogging actually was,  it's a journal that I'll be able to to write about anything pertaining to our business and never lose. Announcing a new feature!

This blog post was created on April 22nd - it's now May 4th and you're just now seeing it.  I'm utilizing our new nifty future release tool.  Another change...when I wrote this post I was Lindsey Young, and I'm now Lindsey Bailey!  I'm probably sitting on the beach somewhere in Grand Cayman Islands on my honeymoon...and the blogging software has done the work for me by scheduling this post during my 2 week vacation for my wedding and honeymoon.  Why is this relevant to you?

1.  One or two of your employees might be creating the lions share of the blog content.  What if they too go on an extended leave?  Schedule their content for future release so you're still getting the recency/frequency factors for SEO.

2.  You just adopted our platform and you have a ton of backlogged content.  Go ahead and put it all on our platform, just schedule the posts to role out at increments of daily or every other day.

A few months ago I sat through a talk by a "blogging expert" that said some businesses were not sexy enough to blog.  I know, I'm not supposed to hate...but come on folks.   If a business exists at all, it exists because it provides some value to some population.  Businesses exist to solve problems.

Starting to see momentum

The beauty of this blog (in my opinion) is that we are going through this experience together!  This is my first shot at writing a blog and it may be your first time ever reading or subscribing to a blog.  We are taking this path of adventure together!

I am starting to gain momentum from having this blog and I have only been writing to it for the past two weeks.  Let me say that again, my blog is starting to get results and it has only been two weeks!  Please dont get me wrong, I am not trying to boost and get a big head about it.  To be completely honest, without Compendium, the best blogging solution available, my blog postings would not be nearly as exposes to any potential clients as they are with Compendium as my affordable blogging software provider.

Design world catching up with technology, 2.0

I was perusing the Communication Arts Interactive Annual's panel of judges. Each judge has a little bio, as well as a nice snippet of video talking about interactive design. I recommend checking them out.

Jon McVey, of ZAAZ, has some really intersting points, as do all the judges. He says that technology and innovation are constantly pushing ahead, blazing new trails, creating more business ideas, markets and activities.

But, in McVey's opinion, the design world is just now catching up with the web 2.0 stuff, and haven't had the time to give the polish that they would like to.

This should be really exciting to anybody involved in 2.0, because blog design is only going to get better from here.

Good design to me means easy on the eyes. Inspiring to look at. Simplicity. Crystal clear communication. Awesome creativity.

To my boss Megan, better design means lower bounce rates. Higher conversion rates.

Whatever floats your boat! Bottom line is, better design equals better blogs.

Design and technology can and should work together, and it's an exciting time to be involved. I think there is a natural tendency to design our blogs and websites based on "what we've seen before." But keep in mind, what we've seen before might not be the best solution creatively. What works for some might not work for you.

As Toria Emery of Goodby Silvertstein and Partners said, the creatives and the developers haven't really worked in unison until recently. Remember, design on the whole is just now catching up to the innovation of 2.0. So keep this in mind when looking to design your own personal blog or your business blog. Look at examples of blogs and sites that you like. Look at those that you can't stand! Ask yourself why they work or do not. Most importantly, ask yourself what works for your specific company, product or passion.

Set Time to Blog

A vast majority of my clients tell me how hard it is for them to find time to blog.  This post is dedicated to those individuals.  If you "don't have time", then make time. The best blogging solution is to schedule time in your calendars.


I schedule time in my Outlook Calendar:  This can be done by right clicking on the calendar and setting up a new appointment.  Remember, this should take no more than 20 minutes.  Please take 5 minutes and schedule 1 time per week for the next month to blog in your calendars! 


Seth Godin Video on Tribes

Last year I posted that 2008 was the year of 'micro', where folks have begun to gather and organize in their own niche groups.  Of course, Seth Godin wrote the book much more eloquently as I could - Tribes.

Seth also did a fantastic job of explaining how companies need to leverage this human behavior to capture and grow their business.  Mass media does not work anymore, in your face marketing does not work.  What works is enabling the way that your clients or prospects will find you and your products or services.

I don't believe there is a more superior medium than blogging to provide your business with the tools it needs to be discovered by the tribe.  And the best blogging solution for your business is Compendium Blogware.

SEO, I know what SEO means...ok, not really

When initiating client conversations about what it is we do here at Compendium, we constantly throw out the term, "SEO," assuming everyone knows what it means. I mean, it's web basics, right? No, in reality some of our clients have no idea what SEO means,but nod their heads with a sly smile on their face. I know in the back of their minds they're thinking, "I'll just let them talk about it and the product, then look up that term in wiki tonight."

Allow me to help...As defined in Wikipedia, Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results for targeted keywords.

Now you know what it means, how do you achieve this? Again, allow me to help:

    *  Set page titles accordingly. Page titles appear in the top left hand corner of         the browser window. If the page is "Best Blogging Software," the page title             should incorporate something like,"Compendium Blogware - Best Blogging             Software".
    *   Use description information with a concise overview of the page's purpose.           For example, "Compendium Blogware, best blogging solution for your                     business."
    *   Keywords, Keywords, Keywords. Use them and use them often.

Blog Traffic: Country Road or Rush Hour?

Does the above picture look all familiar to you? No, I'm not talking about a family road trip or being lost on a barren highway; I'm talking about your website.  Too frequently we find ourselves investing time and money into learning the reasons for website 'high traffic' periods and 'low traffic' periods.  With these variables aside, one thing that is certain for sure: traffic needs a means by which to reach a website.  Better yet, traffic needs a reason.  Just like we set out on the open road in our car, we are searching for something or traveling to a specific destination.  It doesn't matter which route we take as long as its the shortest and most efficient for us. 

How can we as a company provide the shortest and most direct route to our website?  Which keywords (roads) will facilitate that traffic?  The answer to these may be simpler than you think.

It starts with a foundation:

A website strategy:

What market are we targeting? What product or service are we selling? What factors are in our favor? What resources can we tap into? Does our site design represent our brand/company image?

These are all important questions that need to be asked in the preliminary stage.  Thorough analysis of these questions, and questions like them, will provide the best return on investment. Try this for a change: run a consumer feedback program for six-months on the existing website.  Ask questions that will return answers pertinent to age, income, gender, location, and buying habits.  This will help your company to extrapolate the important data; doing so will help build a better strategy and foundation.

Move to a plan:

Take the data return in the strategy forming phase and interpret it.  For example, the previous website design and strategy was aimed at 35 – 50 year old males who live predominantly on the east coast.  The data you have just received from this new survey suggests that 21 – 35 year old males from the Southwest are now the majority of site frequenters.  Takes this data and change the site content according to the data received while still keeping the integrity of the company’s brand image.

Now that the site is changed accordingly to target the correct market, how do you create site traffic? CNNMoney.com features a great article on Jan. 16, 2008 about some tips that will create website buzz.  Offer something free-of-charge to those who do visit your site - and it can be as simple as information or advice…” For example, the website the targets males in the Southwest, offer links to other sites that offer: cheap flights to southwestern cities or ticket deals to sports games (NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, etc).  This will give an incentive to this target market to return to the site.

Maintain the Traffic:

Maintenance:

Site traffic cannot sustain itself.  Traffic must be generated through maintenance of the website and the blog.  A good way of doing this is to re-evaluate the site’s target market and target demographic every so often.  In more volatile industries, a six-month review period may be the best solution; industries that have a less volatile environment, a one, two or three year review may pose the best option.  In this re-evaluation, rerun the survey in the strategy phase.  Find out who your customer is and why they are frequenting your site.  On top of this, find out what your customer wants.  Analytical programs such as Google Analytics can serve as a starting point to uncovering the most hit webpage on your website.  If the site begins to draw less and less traffic, switch it up! Feature new offers, games, videos, and other engaging activities that will hook the consumer to the website and, eventually, the company.

The kicker? This all costs less than any T.V commercial, magazine advertisement, radio spot, or SEO consultant.
