Tips & Tricks - #3 "Blog Title"

Monday, November 30, 2009 by Allison Bowen
When you first log in to the Compendium blog software for the first time, you'll be asked to complete a four-step setup process.  This process is very simple, but often users get stuck on one part -- the blog title.

What is a blog title?  What should yours be?

A blog title is different than a post title.  Post titles are specific for each post you write and appear at the top of the post.  A blog title is the title you choose for your user blog page.  When a reader clicks on your name as an author, they'll be taken to your user blog page, which contains all of the posts written specifically by you.  At the top of this page, they'll be able to see your blog title!

Actually titling your blog may take some thought.  It should reflect what you are going to be writing about or what you do at your company.  It may or may not use a keyword phrase.  Also, this blog title becomes part of the URL and can not be changed.  While you can later go back and re-title your blog through the account screen, your original title will always remain in the URL.

When developing the title, you may also wish to consider how you would like to promote your blog within social media, e-mail signatures, etc.  For example, my blog title here at Compendium is "Basic Blogging for Business."  If you look above my sticky post, you'll see my title.

Good luck!

The Real Truth

Thursday, September 17, 2009 by Brian Graham
I thought one of the great points during Chris Baggott's latest webinar was why would you blog?  You have a business blog because you are trying to make money by solving problems.

It is no secret to your future customers that you are in business to make money.  So why should you try to hide this fact on your corporate blog.  Search marketing can be done easily when you implement business blog software.  Blog marketing is the cutting edge of search marketing.  Embrace it and start driving traffic and converting visitors into business.

Welcome to Compendium! A Walk Through Your Post Set-Up Process.

There is nothing quite as exciting as that first time you get an e-mail saying that you are now officially a Compendium blogger.  Okay, maybe there are a few things more exciting, but not many!  Who doesn't want to blog with the best blogging software available?  Once you log in to the Compendium system with your new username and a temporary password you may think you're all set to start writing.  But what's that?  Information to fill out?

Don't worry, just like many software programs, Compendium needs to know a little bit about you before you can start creating those magnificent posts.  To begin, you will need to create a new password.  We don't want you to have to remember that temporary password forever!

After completing that step, you'll then be asked to create a blog title and blog description.  Many people will quickly title their blog "Allison's blog" or something of the sort.  However, did you know that your blog title is also included in your post URL?  When someone views your post specifically it will also appear in the header.  Just like the rest of your posts, search engines pick up keywords used within your title as well.  So think wisely before naming your blog!  For example, my blog title is "Basic Blogging for Business."  The next box asks you to develop a blog description.  Just a few short sentences regarding what your posts will generally be about is perfect!

And looky there, you're all ready to begin writing your first post!  That wasn't so hard, was it?

Happy Blogging!

Take the Easy Route: Blog for Business

Thursday, July 2, 2009 by Allison Bowen
It's amazing how much the marketplace has changed in just a few short years.  Take for example, a September 19, 2005, Wall Street Journal article describing the crazy adventures of two men attempting to get their new product to market.

"The pair had finally scored a coveted 8 a.m. appointment with a Wal-Mart buyer -- giving them a chance to get their ergonomic pen, the PenAgain, in from of the world's largest retailer.  But with only 10 minutes so spare, that chance was slipping away as the entreprenuers sat, panicked, still a mile and a half away."

I wonder what that pair would do now if I told them it's not nearly that hard to get a new product to market.  They can simply blog for business!  That's right, a blog can help you in many ways.

Say for instance, PenAgain knew that much of their target market spends many hours a day online.  If someone were to search for an inventive writing product, he or she may Google "creative writing pen".   What if the first organic search result that appeared was for a PenAgain blog?  Clearly many sales would develop from those that click through to the blog and saw all that the company had to offer.

This is where Compendium Blogware comes in.  Compendium provides the best blogging software that will get companies search engine optimization results.  It's not just about blogging in order to relate to your customers anymore.  While that is certainly still a great reason to blog, there is more that can be accomplished.  Using basic blog software from Compendium, any company can increase their SEO and thus drive more potential clients to their website.

Had PenAgain been launching their product today, I would have suggested they done so online first rather than take it directly to Wal-Mart with no evidenece that the product would sell.  Why go through all the trouble when there is an easy route to success?  As a start-up company, PenAgain would not be able to afford pricey PPC.  Instead, it could choose an affordable blogging software and be well on its way.

Blogging for business is simple.  It doesn't involve a lot of money or a scramble to Wal-Mart's headquarters.  Instead, it involves a committment to writing blogs and a call to Compendium today.  Why not save yourself some trouble and give it a try?

CAN I GET A WITNESS?

Wednesday, November 12, 2008 by mikey mioduski
Do your customers have a web browser?

A few of our top dogs were in a discussion panel on corporate blogging yesterday and I was fortunate enough to get to watch the entire thing and break it apart in the incredibly exciting Windows Movie Maker.

One thing that did excite me today was hearing some of the pointers from Chris Baggott and Douglas Karr on how basic blog software can lift basically any organization in search.

The first question asked to the panel was Which businesses benefit the most from blogging?  Here was my favorite remark of the entire hour discussion-- from the VP of Blogging Evangelism himself, Mr. Douglas Karr: "If your customers have a web browser, you should be blogging."

In other words, I want you blogging right now.

Check back in soon for clips from the panel.

AdAge is great for a wake up call for Corporate Blogging

Wednesday, November 5, 2008 by Chris Baggott
Corporate blogging software, blog solution, new media, web 2.0I love getting AdAge every week.  Although it's print, the headlines are enough to hopefully get marketers of all stripes to realize that the old way of interruption marketing is doomed.

Take this week's top three:

  1.     Media dollars drop despite election year
  2.     Will Print Survive the next 5 years?
  3.     As ratings fall, nets take on ad-skipping

Couple this with an IBD story about the decline of ad networks and why social media sites are struggling to monetize and a marketer has to realize that the fact that you are making a pitch because I happen to be (reading a paper, watching a show, or visiting a website) consuming content isn't going to work any more.

Companies now have to focus on real acquistion tactics and costs...and the only mass acquistion tool that is prove to work is search.   More specifically data driven organic search.

With data driven SEO, the marketer is delivering their message up to a search term.  Corporate Blogging empowers this by being easy to use and providing real blog content generated by employees and constituents.  I'm not talking about basic blog software, but software designed for business blogging. the best blogging software is a software that aligns content around keywords and topics.

by leveraging content and targeting specific keywords (in the hundreds or thousands) you are anticipating a need...waiting.  Data tell us that x number of prospects will be researching using the terms you identify.   Rather than interrupting 100x hoping to get to x, you just wait for X to come.   Then politely say: "hey, we can help".

Are your Business Blogs Invisible?

Tuesday, October 28, 2008 by Chris Baggott
Invisibility is a dream of many....BUT NOT A GOAL OF MARKETERS!

A content management system or Blog Building Software is useless if it makes you invisible to the people searching for your business.

Basic Blog Software is usually pretty good at helping a business target one or even a few keywords.  The problem of course is that most business bloggers (or marketers) want to target hundreds or thousands of keywords, not one or two...or even 10.

By definition, that means organizations need to have multi user blog software and blogging technologies that scale beyond what one can get out of software designed for citizen journalism and focused on the ROI associated with SEO and lowering the cost of customer acquisition.

I know this sounds self serving but I started Compendium Blogware because there was no other solution of business blogging on the market that would help me accomplish my goals.  I don't want to be invisible.....and neither do you!

Managing a blog for SEO

Monday, October 27, 2008 by Jim Hyslop
I was fortunate enough last week to have a really good meeting with a potential client who has been exploring blogging for her company. Over the past 60 days she has been doing research on basic blog software trying to determine which solution may be the easiest to use and manage from a blogging perspective and from an SEO perspective.

She had done her homework but was very discouraged about all of the time and energy she was going to have to spend in an area where she really knew very little. Needless to say when she asked the question..."so, how can Compendium help me" she was very pleased with what she heard.

We were the breath of fresh air she had been looking for simply because we took all of the blog management responsibilities off her shoulders and carried that burden for her. Not only that but our interface made it simple for her to get in create content and get out.

A one stop shop solution for everything she needed right here in one easy solution. So don't fear the things you don't know about. Employ someone who does and allow your business succeed.

Compendium Blogware Closes $1.6mm

Friday, June 27, 2008 by Chris Baggott
chris baggott of Compendium Blogware Corporate Blogging Software Solution with Seth Godin I am pleased to announce that we were quickly oversubscribed on our most recent funding round.

Seeking $1.5mm we quickly had commitments from angel investors for $1.6 at which point we closed the round.

Whats significant about Compendium Blogware's Corporate Blogging software is we are able to get by on much smaller investments than a traditional software startup.   This may not always be the case, but at this point because our client base is growing so quickly we are able to fund a great deal of the company out of operations......kind of old fashioned I know :-)

But obviously, we are really excited and proud to have the support of our investors and proud of the fact that that so many Organizations (from large enterprises to small businesses) are finding tremendous value in our blog management software.

Blogging for business is just beginning a rapid adpotion and organizations are recognizing the need for an easy to deploy SaaS solution with a solid ROI.

Keywords and What they Mean for You

Friday, April 18, 2008 by Kristen Raves
One of the greatest benefits of our software is the keyword blogs that we provide.  We work with  you and our SEO experts to determine how people are searching for your company on the web.  We come up with a list of keywords that you then blog about.  Ultimately, the goal is ranking on the first page of Google.

In a recent article written by PJ Fusco she explains that:

"Content optimization remains an important focus of any SEO (define) campaign. Because you're probably adding content to your site or blog constantly, there are always new opportunities to improve overall visibility on search engines. But to be found for the right words on any site, you must undergo regular, extensive keyword research."

Compendium is using a tool that no other blog platform is utilizing.  In our software we provide what we call a "keyword cloud" or "tag cloud".  This is a list of all of the keywords your organization wants you to be blogging about to win SEO.  Our tool will tell you which keywords you should be writing more content about based on the font size in the cloud.  The larger the font, the more it has been blogged about.  The smaller the font, the less postings appear under the category letting the blogger know what they should be writing about.

This is just another advantage to using Compendium versus any other software blogging platform out there.  Additionally, it is another reason why you should be blogging with us!

Corporate Blogging with Travel Companies

Monday, March 24, 2008 by Chris Baggott
There was a nice (if slightly mis-guided) article in the USA Today about Corporate Blogging in the Travel Industry.  I love that these guys are promoting the benefits of creating a blog for companies.   With affordable blogging software, blogging for business becomes a increasingly effective strategy.

What I though was wrong was the comment in the last paragraph:

But official forays into the blogosphere remain scarce — with good reason, says Troy Thompson of the Arizona Office of Tourism and the blog Travel 2.0. "We talk about all these new technologies, but maintaining a blog takes a good chunk of time,"

What Troy doesn't understand is that if you empower your employees and other constituents to participate, using professional blog software, the burden of content creation gets spread out to all interested parties.  The more employee blogging, the more success and the easier it is to leverage your blog for SEO.

Affordable blogging software that is specifically designed with blogs for Companies in mind are mostly SaaS offering meaning they are easy to set up and easy to use.

Troy, you are just using the wrong corporate blogging software.
