Blogging the summer away...

Hello there! I'm Mitch Burk and I am currently working as a marketing intern here at Compendium Blogware!

Although I have got my feet wet in the world of blogging before, this is my first shot at "business blogging."  The focus on blogging was the selling point with me when I considered applying to work here at Compendium.  It has only taken me a couple days on the job to realize the potential that can be stored up within a blog.  I see Compendium as a company that can work toward helping companies, both big and small, find that potential and learn how to capitalize on it!

I look forward to interacting with you this summer and providing a little insight into how blogging has played a role in my life and how it can begin to play a role in yours (even if you don't possibly see how)...  I will also be maintaining a restaurant blog featuring some of the best restaurants Indianapolis has to offer!

Well, now that we're friends... I look forward to blogging with you this summer!

Summer Internship '09: The Finale

Friday, August 7, 2009 by Mitch Burk
Internships are weird.  They are just so... temporary.  You spend the beginning phases trying to figure everything out, from understanding the software, to fixing a paper jam, to mastering the coffee maker.  Then once you get the hang of it, you start trying to master the trades you've been learning.  And then, just about the time you get it all figured out, everything starts to click, and tasks that used to take an hour can be completed in about 5 minutes... Surprise! It's your last week and the stint is coming to a close... Where did the time go!?

Maybe that is not the feeling of every intern, but from talking to peers about their experiences, it seems like a pretty typical description of an internship.  I have always been told that an internship is about learning, and in that sense, this position has been a great success.  I have been able to learn about so many aspects of the business world and, most importantly the potential of "the blog."

In thirteen weeks, I have moved between three different offices, learning from three very different departments.  Starting out in the Marketing office was perfect.  I was able to see first hand how much thought and precision goes into the makings of a website, an email, or a marketing campaign.  Moving into Product Support was helpful in such a different way... I was able to learn about the more technical side of our company from building a website to helping clients with troubleshooting.  And then finishing up in the Client Success office enabled me to see what happens with our current clients.  Seeing our Client Success Managers teach clients how to blog effectively drove home my feelings toward the company: Compendium cares about their clients.

The first blog I ever wrote for Compendium was about their willingness to help clients in the long haul.  And experiencing three different departments first hand solidified this thought.  I feel very lucky that I was able to get such a diversified look into the business world and especially lucky that it was with a company as passionate about their product and clients as Compendium.

Hard to believe it's now been 13 weeks since I first started here at Compendium.  I came in nearly completely blind to the world of search marketing and couldn't have told you what a business blog was.  Now, while I'm working through my last day of my summer internship, I am simply trying to process everything I have learned and experienced this summer.

This summer, I've have the pleasure of being a blogger, a trainee, a trainer, a proof reader, a researcher, a distributor, an envelope stuffer, a printer, a provider of a candy jar, a Starbucks addict, and a coffee maker.  But most importantly: I'm lucky to have been a Compendium intern.

Thanks for reading...

What if Google had an infomercial?

Friday, July 31, 2009 by Mitch Burk
After finding out that they are making Snuggies for dogs, it inspired me to wonder... What if Google had a cheesy infomercial...?

Picture this:
(In black and white, with people struggling through the following tasks) Remember those days of picking up phone books if you needed to call and find a plumber? How about searching through dozens of volumes of encyclopedia's just to figure out a fact about the Great Barrier Reef? And who can forget the pain of wresting big, bulky maps if you needed directions?

TURN THIS...
INTO THIS!

Well you don't have to worry about any of those strenuous activities any more! Say hello to the Google Search Engine!
(Shift to all color with happy people)  With the Google machine, you can type with ease as you find all the information you could ever want to know!  Simply type in your question or product you are looking for and BAM! It shows up instantly!

Let's face it... no one is looking for information in places besides the internet.  Majority of people who are online use search to find the products and services they are looking for.  It only makes sense that if you are trying to connect those people to your company, you want to show up at the top of Google searches.  With Compendium's revolutionary blog software, it makes online marketing a stress-free way to reach your audience.

The days of relying on people finding your company through the Yellow Pages or other old school marking strategies are over... If you want to be found, insert yourself in the place where people are looking.  Contact Compendium today and learn more about a business blog software that will help your company succeed!

Take a magnified look into your blogging strategy...

Friday, July 31, 2009 by Mitch Burk
Toys are so much better now than when I was a kid... My eight year old brother has a toy that is arguably the coolest form of entertainment ever created.  It's called the Eyeclops.  It looks like a mix between a webcam and a video game, but it is actually a microscope capable of magnifying images 200x's and projecting them on a television!

All of the sudden carpet becomes a giant bundle of yarn, hairs suddenly look more like trees, and a paper cut looks like the grand canyon.  The "up close and personal" look can reveal so much not seen on the surface.  Without magnification, we can only make certain assumptions and judgments based on the picture we create in our minds.  However, upon a closer look, we can discover the  complex design and intricate detail that goes into making everything we see work the way it does.

Blogging is no exception to this phenomenon.  To most people who only see a blog from a normal, surface level view, it looks like nothing more than a journal.  A blog appears to be a place where people post pictures and build networks with other bloggers.  But what would happen if you used the Eyeclops to look deep into the intricate workings of a blog? What sorts of potential and complex design would be found?

Compendium Blogware is your "Blogging Eyeclops."  When you use to blog as an online marketing tool, you instantly turn your blog into so much more than an online diary, and you pack your blog with the potential to fuel up your search marketing campaign.

Compendium also offers a more in depth look into how your blog is performing.  Every week you get an detailed look into the effectiveness of your blog strategy, as well as tips on how to learn more about blog marketing.

In order to get a more detailed look into the blogosphere, why not sign up now for a free webinar or download a whitepaper here and let Compendium co-founder Chris Baggott explain the power locked inside a blog.

Now I know my ABC's...

Wednesday, July 29, 2009 by Mitch Burk
I've now posted 26 blogs relating the blogging world to the alphabet.  Within these blogs, I discussed some better blogging practices and what makes Compendium different than other blogging platforms.

Some of them were a stretch, but in all seriousness, Compendium works.  If you're looking to acquire business through blogging, take advantage of any of the following:

-Download a case study and learn about how our clients are seeing success
-Attend a webinar and hear first-hand from Compendium's CEO how to utilize our blog software
-Download a white paper and take an inside look into the blogging world
-View a demo with a sales associate and get a $50 gift card

Also, all of the letter pictures included were photo's I've taken in the past few months... if you're interested to see more, don't hesitate to ask!

Z... the end.

Wednesday, July 29, 2009 by Mitch Burk
Z is the end.  It is the perfect conclusion of the alphabet, in my opinion...

Ending a blog post is very important, you can use the end of your post to motivate your reader to make a move away from the blog to your website so they can find your product.  Putting links or pictures at the end of a post provides a solid conclusion to all of your content, so you should make it easy for a reader to know how to follow up on all the information you included in the post.

Put links to downloadables, videos, or your online store directly into the conclusion of your blog.  Readers shouldn't be left wondering how to find all of the things you talked about during you blog.

At Compendium, we try to provide plenty of links directly back to our website so you can find more information about our blog software.  We also keep case studies and white papers on our page that we would love for readers to find.

Remember to end you posts strong!

Yours

Wednesday, July 29, 2009 by Mitch Burk
Your blog is... yours.

Let me repeat myself: YOUR blog is YOURS.

When writing about your product or service, remember... YOU are the expert. YOU are the most qualified person to discuss it.  People looking for information about a product or service don't want a review from a third party writer... They want the expert!

When looking on a way to make your online marketing effective, remember to motivate your employees to write... They are going to be the ones who people want to learn from, and they know the most up-to-date news about the company.

If you're looking on information on how to start a business blog and claim a piece of the online marketing world as your own, contact Compendium today and we'll show you where to start!

Xenophobia

Wednesday, July 29, 2009 by Mitch Burk
Xenophobia is a big reason why many people are hesitant to start a blog.  What is xenophobia?  It is the fear of the unknown...  Many people are not familiar with blogging.  They see it as just a journal and some place to share feelings, but when they see the business potential behind it, it makes blog marketing much easier to understand.

Compendium will help you eliminate a xenophobic view toward blogging.  We never leave you in the dark... We turn the uncomfortable, unknowing feeling into a business plan.  We show you how to make the most out of your blog, everything from the title, to the colors, to the content.

Xenophobia is the one of the most common fears today... Compendium is the perfect solution to make it a comfortable, easy experience.

Views & Visitors

Wednesday, July 29, 2009 by Mitch Burk
Views to your blog are going to be very important, obviously, to making you search marketing work.  However, one thing to keep in mind about the blogging world is that, statistically, very few people keep coming back and following your blog...

Most of the visitors to Compendium's blogs every month are first time visitors.  This is a good thing! This means that you aren't just reaching the same few people multiple times, but your blog marketing is reaching unique viewers and spreading the presence to a much broader audience.

So don't stress about followers, subscribers, or comments... focus your time on unique viewers and visitors.  It will make your approach to online marketing much stronger and less stressful.

Discovering the unlimited potential...

Tuesday, July 21, 2009 by Mitch Burk
Up until a few months ago, I had rarely spent time reading blogs or and had very limited experience in the blogosphere.  Then, one piece of information entered my life and changed that: My girlfriend loves blogs. And as any good boyfriend should, I tried to take an interest in her interests.  Nearly every day she was giving me the newest update from (now nationally known) mckmama and a few other blogs her and her friends followed.

The blogs would spark conversation, usually starting with, "Why don't I write a blog!? It's such a cool concept!" and then, sadly, almost always ending with, "Well, my life can't possibly be interesting enough that anyone would want to read about what I had for lunch today or how my group meeting went last night..."

Prior to finding Compendium, my knowledge on blogs and their usefulness was incredibly limited...  I had only seen them as a place for people with interesting lives to talk about them, or for kids who need a creative outlet to go post their poems and pictures.

Enter: Business blog software.  Discovering the world of blog marketing was like entering Narnia!  You may laugh, but picture it... those "Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe" kids lived in such a limited world with a limited perspective on life and then upon walking through the wardrobe, they discovered a world of limitless possibilities!  That is the world the Compendium is offering!  Blogs will change your business and show you that you don't have to waste your time, energy, and money on old-school marketing strategies.

I'll be the first to admit, I always put blogs in a box. I didn't understand them and did not see the potential in them... However, it only took a few days at Compendium before I saw the outstanding results that come from the decision to start a business blog.

So, what's your next step? Are you tired of limited business strategies? Take a walk into the world of limitless marketing possibilities and let Compendium show you the way!

Unlimited

Friday, July 17, 2009 by Mitch Burk
Unlimited possibilities exist within a blog.  You can make your online presence as big as you possibly want to and use your blog in any way that fits your company.

I know I've said it a few times before, but my favorite thing about a blog is the unlimited ways to use it.  You can target specific people, you can discuss certain areas of business, and you can use the gifted intellect of all of your employees in different departments to blog about your company.  Everyone can find their place in blogging.

Blog marketing with Compendium makes creating an online presence easy for any company, whether you are a Fortune 500 or a Mom & Pop shop in Small Town, USA... Limiting yourself to old school, one way advertising will continue to limit your chances for customers to find your business.

Title

Friday, July 17, 2009 by Mitch Burk
Titling a blog is an area of concern for people starting out in the blogging world.  Make it short, long, creative, vague, specific, etc...?  The analogy I hear constantly at Compendium makes the most sense: If I'm walking into a library and I'm looking for a book, the title is going to be the first thing I see... It is going to be my first impression of a 300 page book.  It could easily make or break my decision to get the book.

The title of your blog should be a short phrase that really encompasses what you hope to show from your posts.  It also is one of the most important parts of winning search results and making the most of search marketing.  If you want a good example of this, try searching "Corporate blogging software" and you will see that one of Compendium's blogs titled "Corporate blogging software" is the number one result.

Results

Friday, July 17, 2009 by Mitch Burk
Results motivate us.  I wrote a post a few weeks ago about results, but I believe that it is an important enough topic that it deserves repeating.  In my post "Just like blogging, reality TV seeks results" I compared the work and drive that goes into a reality TV program.. all for what? Results.

If you think about it, the motivation we have for anything is the result that will come from it.  If we eat, we will not be hungry... If we go to bed early, we won't be tired in the morning... And if we invest time and energy into a blog marketing campaign, we will see our business showing up in search and customers finding us.

Seem like some pretty strong results if you ask me.  Maybe it's time to stop worrying about what we're doing now and how that's affecting us now and focus our attention in the future to the results of these actions.  Compendium will help you use online marketing to provide results for you company!

Finishing what you started...

Wednesday, July 15, 2009 by Mitch Burk
(For those of you following my "Alphabet blogging" series, sorry to take a quick break from that... it will resume shortly)
Last night I had the pleasure of competing in a game night with some good friends... Scattergories and Dominoes ended up on the schedule for the evening.  For those of you familiar with Mexican Train Dominoes, the game is over when you run out of tiles, however the killer to any game would be the dreaded "Double Sided Domino."  When a player plays the double and can't match it with the following tile, everyone draws until you find a match... this means that someone who has a couple tiles left could end up with five or six!  The person who plays a double but can't "finish what they started" can ruin a game. (which is why our two rounds lasted almost 90 minutes)...

Now I know what you're thinking... Really, Mitch? How does a double sided domino relate to blog marketing with Compendium?  How in the world is not following through in your game like a strong search marketing strategy?

There are plenty of areas in the blogging world that are dependent on finishing strong.  A common issue our clients face is starting off strong with their blogging campaign and then slowly drifting away.  If you want to see results, it is so important to maintain a strong motivation to blog multiple relevant posts every week.

Also, your posts should finish strong.  When finishing a post it is important to provide links to the information on your website that the customer is looking for.  Ultimately, you want your customers to find your website, research your products, and make a purchase.  Include case studies or white papers and make sure to keep your customers informed!  Start strong, finish strong, and you just might end up the big winner... (Trust me, I may have won a round or two last night... all in good timing.)

What do Lou Ferrigno, a Hemi engine, and Compendium Blogware have in common...
POWER

Blogging is the most powerful way to boost your online marketing campaign.  Why? Because is delivers.  What differentiates something normal from something powerful?  Something with power does things that others cannot.

That Hemi engine will pull a 40 foot boat up a steep hill without slowing you down at all...

Lou Ferrigno (aka Mr. Universe & Incredible Hulk) could tear through anything that stood in his way...

Compendium Blogware develops blogging best practices that shoots you business straight to the top of search engines...

Don't waste your time with the dozens of blogging platforms that all give you the same, weak progress... Get in touch with Compendium and we'll show you how to power up your marketing with some powerful blog software.

Length...

Monday, July 13, 2009 by Mitch Burk
Long posts? Short posts? How long should my post be?  Most bloggers get caught up trying to determine just how much information to include within a post.  These are valid concerns because blog writing strategies are different than some of the general writing techniques you've been taught.

There are a few general rules of thumb for writing a blog for business...  Keep blog posts short: about 3 paragraphs, or 250 words, is an ideal amount.  This is enough information to get your point across without boring your reader as soon as they get started reading.  Also, creating bulleted lists can help to organize your post and make them easier for followers to read.

Make sure to effectively space out your paragraphs... it gets difficult to stay motivated and read one giant paragraph.  Strategic "white space" helps readers comprehend and find the information they're looking for.

These are all things that we'll go over with you once you sign on with Compendium.  We work with you to make sure you're using our blog software in a way that will help your company the most.

Networking

Monday, July 13, 2009 by Mitch Burk
Networking is arguably the most important sector in communication today.  The old saying: "It's not what you know, it's who you know" still rings true, and social networking sites are becoming the most popular forms of communication online.  With over 100,000,000 people using social networking sites, it only makes since to utilize them efficiently and link them and reach the people who use them all...

Twitter and Facebook make it easy to post links to your blogs and make your company's presence known through their sites, as well as on your blog.  Check out twitterfeed to learn how to connect your blog to your Twitter updates.

Realizing that your blog marketing campaign is not limited to just a blog will make reaching more people an easy task.  Compendium Blogware is the perfect starting point for making your presence known online!

Organic

Monday, July 13, 2009 by Mitch Burk
Organic search results are what Compendium's about.  In case you're not aware, there are two ways to be found through a search engine... Organically and Pay Per Click.  When a company wants to win a particular keyword or phrase their potential customers may search for, they can bid on a PPC term and pay to show up at the top of a search engine.

When companies win keywords organically, they show up at the top of search engines because their websites contain words that are relevant.  Clients of Compendium win their keywords organically... they optimize search marketing through writing blogs about the phrases that people are searching for.  Organic search is the strongest way to boost your results!

Marketing!

Monday, July 13, 2009 by Mitch Burk
Marketing your company well leads to business.  I've spent a little bit of time in marketing classes in my days at Purdue and I that is the biggest point I've walked away with.  Without marketers within a company, there wouldn't be business.  People rarely flip through the yellow pages calling every listing in there to try and find someone who can solve their problem or provide a product.

It's no surprise, in this day and age, people are getting online to solve their problems or find a product.  Statistics are floating around saying that 90% of the time that people get online, they are searching for something.  It only makes sense to make your online marketing strategy focused on search.  If people are heading to a search engine, then that is where you should go to help them find you.

Using the blog software Compendium offers helps to make marketing through search possible. Like I said at the beginning of this post, marketing your company well leads to business.  If you put your focus on search marketing (where 90% of people are going when they get online), you can effectively reach those 90% more than any other method.

Kite blogging...

Thursday, July 9, 2009 by Mitch Burk
(Yes, I'm still making my way through the ABC's of blogging, today's letter: K)

K
ite blogging is the visual I have when I think of a Compendium client's role as a blogger.  Think about flying a kite... it took a little while before you were completely comfortable with it, but once you got the hang of it, it was such an easy feat.

Another feature of kites is the control that the flier has over them.  It is completely in the hands of the kite operator to determine how high they go.  In this same way, it is completely in the hands of blog writers to determine what heights their blogs will reach...

By writing frequent content with specific keywords, you can see your ROI sky rocket!  When trying to get the most out of your blog software, make sure to title your blogs with strong, relevant terms and plenty of pictures, videos, and links!

In the blogging world, the conditions are perfect for sending your company to incredible heights... the sun is shining, the wind is blowing, and you're in the driver's seat.
